| Exploding hotel rooms, torrential downpours, and armies of ants could not stop goldenstate from releasing their debut EP, Seconds. Gathered around the warm glow of analog gear, amidst a damp California winter, the Bay-area quintet tracked six songs at John Vanderslice’s Tiny Telephone in San Francisco. The CD-EP, recorded on 2-inch tape by Jay Pellicci (Deerhoof, Erase Errata, Okay) and mastered by John Golden (Green Day, Sonic Youth, Chris Isaak), dishes up a powerful, passionate, and honest serving of rock. Soaring from a high-energy start to its melancholy finish, Seconds stands on its own and offers a snapshot of this promising young band.
Formed sometime between 2002 and 2004, goldenstate is a new take on “East meets West.” Five strangers from across the country came together to make music in sunny California. Robert Harvie (Guitar) and Zach Robin(Vocals) had previously collaborated and were looking for a new creative vehicle. Meanwhile, Brian Vaine(Bass) and Lenny Kenyon(Drums) had driven across the country from their native Vermont, seeking the same. A chance meeting on an Internet bulletin board led to the creation of a six-song CD. After an independent release in March and a brief tour, goldenstate found their songs popping up on the US College charts, as well as on the top-sellers lists at regional retail stores.

Encouraged, goldenstate spent this past summer in an abandoned coastal mansion high above the Pacific. Longtime friend Kevin North(Lead Guitar) has also made the trek from Vermont and has become the newest member of the band. Influenced by too many artists to count, the members of goldenstate rely on each other for inspiration. The goal is to craft songs that will last far beyond the gimmick of the day, with a focus on layers, texture, and emotionally charged lyrics.
Their passion for creating captivating music is only surpassed by their work-ethic. With live shows described by one fan as “addictive as heroin” and surprise guests (a dancing poodle shared the stage at the CD-release party), the guys love having a great time with the audience - and it shows. Their music will be featured this fall on VH1 and while they prepare local tour dates, they look forward to expanding outside the west. This fall, goldenstate will emerge, energized and on a mission to reach as many new fans as possible. |
