The current climate of urban music begs for a revolution, an already we see artists as varied as Andre 3000, N.E.R.D., TV on the Radio and Beans leading the charge. Deep in the heart of New York City’s Lower East side, there’s definitely a party going on and at the center of it exists a group Fader magazine calls “The Best Live Band in New York”, Apollo Heights. These afro futurists have been bringing their space-age soul music straight into the hearts and minds of Big Apple hipsters for years now, with classic live shows and late night rave ups. Last year’s single “discolights” goes down as an all time crowd and dance floor pleaser. The brain child of identical twin brothers Danny and Daniel Chavis, two North Carolina natives who first established the seminal black rock band The Veldt (Capitol Records), and bassist/knob twister Hayato Nakao, and well known Afro-Punk guitarist and experimental music innovator Honeychild Coleman, Apollo Heights frays the margins, freaking everything from classic soul to Japanese folk music to subsonic bass. Imagine Curtis Mayfield drunk on Massive Attack, James Baldwin novels and sake. Apollo Heights have just released the EP “Amoeba” produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins and are slated for a European tour. The Veldt helped provide the spark for this new movement, and now Apollo Heights is here to pick up the torch again. Prepare yourself for a seriously enjoyable musical experience.
